National Registration and Accreditation Scheme for Australia
16 November 2009
In March 2008 the Council of Australian Governments signed an intergovernmental agreement for a national registration and accreditation scheme to be in place by 1 July 2010.
Currently there is a registering authority in each state and territory of Australia that is responsible for registration and regulation of pharmacy within that jurisdiction. On 1 July 2010 these registering authorities will be decommissioned and all registration and regulation issues will be the responsibility of the newly established Pharmacy Board of Australia. Registrants will then have national registration that enables them to work anywhere in Australia.
The Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) has been assigned the accreditation fuctions by the Pharmacy Board of Australia and will continue to be responsible for the assessment of overseas trained pharmacists; preparation of all examination material including the entrance examinations (Stage I and CAOP) and pre-registration examination (Stage II); and undertake accreditation of undergraduate, post graduate and pre-registration courses.
APC is working closely with the Pharmacy Board of Australia to assist the Board to acheive its aims for the pharmacy profession.
Any changes to the assessment or examination process will be posted on this website as soon as possible. At this time the potential changes are unknown.
